Here the story of an overly friendly Mormon family who move into town, with the all too perfect Gary befriending Stan and leading to accusations of religious brainwashing, asks all manner of questions about the legitimacy of the Mormon beliefs, but also ends with the writers themselves holding their hands up to their own prejudices. They also went on to pen the hit musical The Book of Mormon, which is far from flattering in its critique. Parker and Stone have spoken about their experiences growing up in Colorado, with its large Mormon community, some of which inspired this episode. A perfectly tight, taut, simple script and real evolution of Cartman’s character, this fully deserves its legendary status. The show incorporates everything from a guest appearance from Radiohead to a wiener-eating pony in Cartman’s quest, but it’s the payoff at the end (which we won’t spoil) that is so hilariously deranged, that you could never have seen it coming. Essentially the story of Cartman hopelessly and endlessly trying to get revenge on 9th grader Scott Tenorman, after he had sold him some pubes. The biggest question after the show(s) was: why is it 30fps on Xbox Series X and Series S and not 60fps? In this IGN Performance preview, we dive into the details shared by the team, the revealed PC minimum and recommended specifications, and how the Creation Engine 2 works, comparing the previous games to gauge some of the potential reasons why the team might have chosen 30fps. With Starfield being the center of the Xbox 2023 Showcase last week, Bethesda gave us a deep dive into one of the biggest games this generation. (And, yes, I see the irony in critiquing an episode that was largely targeting critics.) Then there was "Safe Space," which was brightened by Randy's feud with a Whole Foods checkout guy asking for donations.
While this episode did include the highly entertaining "Boogers and Cum," Cartman's review rampage was stretched out too long. Going off that, "You're Not Yelping" continued the gentrification storyline by adding Yelp to the equation, with mixed results. "The City Part of Town" offered a clever commentary on gentrification, though Kenny's personal subplot felt like an afterthought in that episode.
Subsequent PC-centric episodes didn't hit quite as hard, but they did have their moments. (Though it looks like his presidential campaign may continue in Season 20, leading up to the 2016 election.) That said, Garrison did find an amusing running mate in Caitlyn Jenner. Garrison's involvement here was hilarious, his overarching storyline sort of fizzled out by season's end. "Where My Country Gone?" was another solid entry for Season 19, lampooning the GOP's biggest target, Donald Trump.
